Great SoSpa Corporate Events

I have just returned from yet again an amazing experience of training a group at Wembley Stadium.

Nobody has ever been allowed to do it before so I felt very privileged to be asked once again by Homeserve to run the fitness part of their 20th Anniversary event.

Take a look at the pictures below.

Shave 30,000 extra calories and lose 8LB of fat by making one change to your working day

January 15th, 2014 | Posted by Gail in PT - (Comments Off on Shave 30,000 extra calories and lose 8LB of fat by making one change to your working day)

There are endless fitness tips that I can give you on motivation, new classes, finding great support to assist your health goals etc. Instead I will give you my two top tips for smashing both your health goals and assisting in your work productivity.

In the last four years my work has incorporated a lot more desk based time with the social media marketing and advances in IT we have to keep up with changes. This I noted was affecting my health. Steadily adding a pound or two on more sedentary weeks even though working out with many clients and eating the clean diet and giving me lower back pain . So I made a major change towards the end of 2013 and bought a standing desk, apart from having more strength in my legs, better digestion, increased calorie burn (so a flatter tum). I am energetic and alert for longer. I have regained an upright posture and productivity level has soared. I no longer feel I have to leave my desk for a break, which for some often leads to an unnecessary snack.

Studies have claimed major health benefits for standing for much of the day as opposed to sitting.

How many hours a day you spend sitting? Fewer than eight? More than 10? A recent survey found that many of us spend up to 12 hours a day sitting on our bottoms looking at computers or watching television. If you throw in the seven hours we spend sleeping then that adds up to 19 hours a day being sedentary.

Sitting changes the way our bodies deal with sugar. When you eat, your body breaks down the food into glucose, which is then transported in the blood to other cells.

Glucose is an essential fuel but persistently high levels increase your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Your pancreas produces the hormone insulin to help get your glucose levels back down to normal, but how efficiently your body does that is affected by how physically active you are.

Standing while you are working at the desk isn’t something new. Winston Churchill wrote while working at a special standing desk, as did Ernest Hemingway and Benjamin Franklin.

Prolonged sitting has not only been linked to problems with blood glucose control, but also a sharp reduction in the activity of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down blood fats and makes them available as a fuel to the muscles. This reduction in enzyme activity leads to raised levels of triglycerides and fats in the blood, increasing the risk of heart disease.

Heart rates on average around 10 beats per minute higher working whilst standing and that makes a difference of about 0.7 of a calorie per minute

Now that doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up to about 50 calories an hour. If you stand for three hours a day for five days that’s around 750 calories burnt. Over the course of a year it would add up to about 30,000 extra calories, or around 8lb of fat.

Put that into activity levels  that is the equivalent of running about 10 marathons a year. Just by standing up three or four hours in your day at work

My other tip is check your water supply

Make sure you have plenty on tap!
Read the benefits below to see why I keep coming back to this simple diet improvement.

We spend much of our lives at work so make these changes for yourself and or your workforce in 2014.

October 2012 Fitness Break- what we got up to

November 19th, 2012 | Posted by Gail in Uncategorized - (Comments Off on October 2012 Fitness Break- what we got up to)
Fitness and Fun Holiday

Yes on our fitness and fun breaks you can have a drink !!

Love, Love, Love SoSpa fitness breaks. This one was a bespoke package one on one with Julie Hines for 14 days, yes!! 14 days of workouts and dancing pm because that is what Julie wants.
The breaks are all about YOU.

A typical day would be to wake and go and do a circuit (all outside as we want to absorb the wonderful atmosphere of Lindos). Followed by a swim cool down in the tranquil waters of St Pauls. The water in October is a wonderful 32 degrees temperature and this time we had extraordinary weather for Rhodes as it entered into the 30’s.
After workout and having worked up an appetite it was down to the local village cafe for a tasty greek salad and spinach and bacon omelette as we like to eat clean.
Hitting the beach around midday for a sunbathe and catch up on relaxation time.

Kayaking in Lindos

Julie has bags of energy and about an hour in is twitching for the next workout so its a water based fitness maybe a plyo circuit or with water weights. The sea bed is completely flat on Lindos main beach and can walk out quite far until the water reaches the waist height. It creates excellent workouts to change the body shape. Its fun and cooling – a welcome break from lying down at this point.

We then go and see the guys on the beach bar for some chat and find out the local news , where the best entertainment is going to be for the evening and a drink of something refreshing and back for some R n R on the bed!

Late afternoon is a final workout for the day and we enjoyed going out for an hour and exploring the caves around the bay an simply feeling the freedom of being in the open sea. All these are Julie’s choices that she makes before we go out to Rhodes and there are many options of what exercise can be done. I enjoy Yoga at sunrise or sunset .

Evening is a local taverna, I never do fully inclusive hotel food because there is such a lovely variety of restaurants in Lindos and the welcome and hospitality from the owners make an evening perfect.
We are often invited to dine with the locals on fresh from the boat to the plate fish and really experience the true Greek way of living.

We returned, jeans hanging as always and complete, Mission accomplished – straight home to book for next years Fourth SoSpa holiday !

Take Care of Your Liver

October 18th, 2012 | Posted by Gail in So Lean and Clean Fat Loss Plan - (Comments Off on Take Care of Your Liver)

Our world is loaded with hidden chemicals and poisons, but when it comes to fighting off your body’s toxic burden, you’ve got a dynamic machine— specifically, your liver.

Your liver is the like the “most valuable player” when it comes to keeping you healthy and slim. It controls the levels of various chemicals in your body, cleans poisons and toxins out of your system, and helps regulate the amount of fats in your body by producing bile, which digests the fats you eat.
Many people ignore this key organ by doing and eating things that cause it to work less efficiently, or even to break down. With a little daily maintenance, you can keep your liver running in tip-top shape — and help it help you to lose weight and get healthier.

Here’s what you need to do on a daily basis:
Twice a day, just before a meal, drink a cup of warm water with the juice of half a fresh lemon. This lemon water water is known to aid in bile formation, resulting in more efficient fat metabolism.
Eat protein every day, preferably at every meal. The liver needs the amino acids from protein to produce bile and make all the enzymes used in detoxification.
Eggs are a great source of protein, plus they have the added bene?t of being naturally rich in lecithin, a substance your liver needs to produce bile. Get essential fatty acids daily, especially omegas-3s, from walnuts, flaxseed and/or salmon, fish-oil supplements, or cod-liver oil.
Essential minerals such as copper, magnesium, and zinc play an important role in liver detoxification, along with vitamin C, most of the B vitamins, folic acid, and flavonoids (found in richly colored vegetables such as sweet red peppers).
Your body is like a car. In order to keep it running, you need to put high-quality gas in the fuel tank, investigate when you hear something strange clanking under the hood, and do everything you can to keep it running in optimum condition.

You shouldn’t be treating your car better than you treat your body! Your liver processes every single toxin that passes through your body, it deserves some nurturing .

Geraldine, Lee and I coming out of the tunnel

I have had THE most fun start to the week on a Corporate job at Twickenham Stadium taking two of my colleagues, who some of you probably recognise as Lee Roberts and Geraldine Agnew.

SoSpa Corporate was asked to host a Fitness bootcamp for at Twickenham Stadium for 110 delegates and split them into smaller groups for Beginner/int/adv level training where we instructed on agility training with cones and ladders,HIIT, some core strength and a taster run or sprint session.
It was a huge WOW factor walking through the tunnel into the fabulously well managed and maintained venue, when I am next flagging in the gym I will draw from the visual memory of that workout to push the extra mile! I love the corporate work its so varied and thats a hugely important part of maintaining an excitement and freshness in work. If you think your company convention or conference could benefit by adding some oomph from a corporate workout. Then mail me for info, the list of wellbeing packages are endless to suit your requirements inc express massages.

Weston Manor Hotel Oxfordshire

Corporate Fitness at Weston Manor

On 11th and 12th of July I was asked to go down to Weston Manor and create and host an orienteering event and a circuit session and Run  for a Midland Company.

I love to shake things up in my business as it keeps me fresh and motivated working with my Personal Training Studio on one to one and small group training. My fitness holidays in the UK and Greece and SoSpa Corporate.

The Weston Manor Hotel is set within 12 acres of private land so there was plenty of key places I could place my control points and to make it a little light hearted I ran a Trivia Quiz along with the walk.

The following morning I took a HIIT training session with the guys and a 25 minute run around the beautiful grounds followed by a short Yoga session. Fortunately this rainy July weather held off for a couple of hours and we had a lovely refreshing sunny workout.
