At Gail Abbey Fitness, I offer women’s strength training in Lichfield for every stage of life.
Something I’ve noticed more than ever at my personal training studio is just how broad the range of women wanting to get stronger has become.
And I absolutely love it!
We’re no longer talking about strength training as something reserved for young, athletic women or people who want to compete in bodybuilding.
In fact, women are discovering that lifting weights can help them through almost every stage of life.
From expectant mums wanting to stay fit and healthy throughout pregnancy to women in their 40s and 50s wanting to build muscle and navigate menopause, right through to ladies in their late 70s who want to remain active, mobile and independent.
Although their goals may be completely different, the underlying principle remains the same.
Building strength helps you build a more capable body and enjoy more of your life.
Why More Women Are Choosing Strength Training In Lichfield
Having worked in the fitness industry since 1990, I’ve seen a huge change in how women approach exercise.
Years ago, the focus was often on losing weight, burning calories and spending endless hours doing cardiovascular exercise.
Thankfully, the conversation is changing.
As a result, more women are beginning to understand that building muscle isn’t just about appearance.
Regular strength training can help:
- Build and maintain muscle mass
- Support bone health and reduce age-related muscle loss
- Improve balance, stability and mobility
- Support joint function and everyday movement
- Improve body composition
- Build confidence and physical resilience
- Make everyday activities feel easier
Perhaps most importantly, it helps women remain capable of doing the things they love.
Whether that’s lifting a toddler, carrying a suitcase, walking up a hill on holiday or getting up from the floor without assistance.
That’s what I call fitness for real life.
Antenatal Fitness in Lichfield: Staying Strong During Pregnancy
One of the areas I’m particularly pleased to see growing is the number of expectant mums wanting to continue exercising throughout pregnancy.
Pregnancy doesn’t automatically mean stopping strength training.
In fact, for women with uncomplicated pregnancies, appropriately adapted resistance exercise can be a valuable part of staying active.
Instead of chasing personal bests, the emphasis shifts towards maintaining strength, managing effort and adapting exercises as the body changes.
The NHS guidance on exercise during pregnancy also encourages women to remain active throughout pregnancy, adapting activity to their individual circumstances.
At Gail Abbey Personal Training Studio in Lichfield, antenatal sessions are individually adapted to pregnancy stage, exercise experience and medical guidance.
I focus on appropriate movement, strength, posture, confidence and preparing the body for the physical demands of motherhood.
And afterwards?
Following childbirth, appropriately adapted strength training can help women progressively rebuild strength, reconnect with their bodies and return to exercise at a pace that’s right for them, with appropriate postnatal assessment and medical guidance where needed.
Strength Training During Menopause: You Have More Control Than You Think
Let’s talk about menopause.
Because this is an area where I see so many women unnecessarily lose confidence in their bodies.
For example, changes in hormones, sleep, recovery, energy and body composition can make exercise feel different from how it did in your 20s and 30s.
But that doesn’t mean getting stronger is off the table!
Far from it.
Fortunately, strength training during perimenopause and postmenopause can help preserve muscle, improve strength, support bone health and maintain physical function.
And yes, it can help improve body composition alongside appropriate nutrition.
But here’s something I tell my clients regularly.
You don’t necessarily need to train MORE. You need to train with purpose.
That means learning correct technique, gradually increasing resistance, eating enough to support your training and allowing your body to recover.
Ultimately, it’s about making the time you spend training actually count.
Strength Training Over 60 and 70: Training for Independence
This is one of my favourite parts of personal training.
Working with women who aren’t necessarily interested in lifting the heaviest weights or changing their dress size.
Instead, they have a different ambition.
They want to keep doing things for themselves.
Getting out of a chair comfortably.
Climbing stairs.
Carrying shopping.
Enjoying holidays.
Walking confidently.
Getting down onto the floor and back up again.
And maintaining the independence they’ve worked their whole lives to enjoy.
In fact, the NHS physical activity guidelines for older adults recommend activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility at least twice a week.
Strength training for women in their 60s, 70s and beyond can be adapted to individual ability, medical history and confidence.
For example, some women begin with basic movement patterns, balance exercises and gentle resistance.
Meanwhile, others are perfectly capable of challenging strength sessions with progressively heavier weights.
Your age doesn’t determine what you’re capable of. Your individual starting point helps determine how we train.
After all, strength training isn’t simply about adding years to your life. It’s about maintaining the quality of life in those years.
